MENTAL BLOCKS
When Your Gymnast Can Do the Skill — But Their Mind Won’t Let Them

Mental blocks are one of the most confusing and heartbreaking challenges for gymnasts and parents alike. You know your child is capable. You’ve seen them do the skill before. Yet suddenly, they freeze, hesitate, or avoid it completely — and no amount of encouragement seems to help.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And more importantly: your gymnast is not broken. As a parent, I know it can feel frustrating and helpless to watch your child struggle mentally when you know they’re physically able.
You may find yourself wondering:
-
Why won’t they just do it?
-
Are they scared, lazy, or overthinking?
-
Should I push them more — or back off?
-
Am I saying the wrong things?
Mental blocks often leave parents feeling stuck too — unsure how to help without making things worse.
I’m a former college gymnast and mental health counselor, and I created Unstuck by combining sport psychology, nervous system regulation, and real-world gymnastics experience. I understand mental blocks from both a professional and personal perspective. I’ve lived them, studied them, and helped countless gymnasts through them. The tools I teach are practical and designed to help gymnasts feel safe, supported, and capable as they move forward.
